Outdoor air across north India gets worse every winter, and it does not stay outside — it comes in through every window gap and door. Indoor PM2.5 in an ordinary home tracks the outdoor reading closely.
Children take the worst of it. They breathe faster than adults relative to their size, so they draw in more polluted air per hour, and their lungs are still developing while they do it.
A whole-house system pushes filtered outdoor air in through HEPA for particles and activated carbon for gases and smell, holds the house at slight positive pressure so dirty air stops leaking in, and keeps the whole home fresh — not one room at a time.
What size unit does your house need?
Sizing is one full air change per hour at a 10 ft ceiling. A 450 CMH unit covers roughly a 1,200–1,600 sq ft home — a typical 3 BHK flat. Long duct runs, higher ceilings or a leaky house all pull that number down.

Winter smog is mostly particles: PM2.5, dust and soot. The ERVs use an H13 HEPA (99.95% at the hardest particle size); the AFV fresh-air units use an H11 rated at up to 95%. Both make a large, measurable difference to an indoor PM2.5 reading.
HEPA does nothing for gases, which is why almost every unit here carries an activated carbon stage as well. Astberg rate it to absorb formaldehyde, benzene, radon and other harmful chemicals, and the filter boxes are rated for PM2.5 and formaldehyde together.
The AFV units add a metal pre-screen for insects and pollen, a 90% pre-filter for mould and spores, and a negative ion stage that Astberg say latches onto dust, bacteria, pollen, smoke and other allergens. The ERVs also control humidity, which is what stops mould and mildew forming.
The AFP350R is the one exception — Astberg list it with dust and HEPA filtration only, no carbon stage, so it is the wrong pick if smell or fumes are your main problem. No unit in this range carries a CO&sub2; or PM2.5 sensor. Carbon saturates over time and must be replaced on schedule to keep working.
